Mane Attractions
Find out which hairstyles will be talk of the town this year.
IF THE EYES are the mirror to one’s soul, then a woman’s hair serves as her crowning glory. Thus, it is not totally hard to understand why ladies make a big fuss about their tresses. A regular visit to the salon to have it trimmed or dyed expectedly sits on top of any woman’s priority list.
As we welcome a brand-new year, Vina Cruz of Donita’s Salon in Marikina City clues us in on what he believes are the hairstyles that will rule 2012. With a nine-year stint as senior hairstylist to his credit, it does not hurt to read through Cruz’s expert opinion.
For Long Hair
Making cute buns with the aid of different hair accessories is ideal for women with long tresses. It doesn’t matter if your hair is wavy or straight, the difference lies in learning to apply varied ponytail ideas to it.
Styling Tip: Hair clips, rubber bands, and bobby pins are a must-have for women blessed with long locks.
Sweet and Neat
Here are steps to create the perfect bun:
1. Gather your hair into a low ponytail for the classic bun or in a high ponytail for the top knot. Lightly tease with fingers to add extra texture.
2. Twist your hair into a bun and tuck in the ends.
3. Place bun pin onto your bun. Gently twist clockwise into hair until secure. Pull out more hair
for more texture.
For a modern take on the classic bun — the messy, undone bun, here’s a step-by-step guide:
1. Gather hair at the nape of your neck (no ponytail holder needed).
2. Twist hair into a tight bun and tuck in the ends.
3. Spin one pin in from the top and the other up from the base, taking care not to interlock pins.
For Short Hair
Bobs and pixie cut are well-suited for short locks. “Pero hindi naman komo sobrang iksi ng ganitong cut, ibig sabihin eh hindi mo na puwedeng paglaruan ang buhok mo para maging attractive siyang tingnan,”
says Cruz. The secret lies in one’s creativity and inventiveness. “Puwede siyang lagyan ng highlights o puwede ring ipaiba mo ang kulay ng buhok mo.”
Styling Tip: You may either curl or iron your tresses, depending on the look that you want to achieve. When you decide to wear a short ‘do, hair gel and hair spray are tools that you cannot do without.
For Medium-Length Hair
The key is to spice up medium-length hair. If you have thick, wavy hair, try a messy updo hairstyle which is advisable for any time of the day. Bobby pins also come in handy when sporting medium-length hair.
Styling Tip: Coloring and perming will help enliven your mane. You can also try wearing it with bangs.
Updo Upgrade
Here are steps to achieve a modern updo:
1. Twist hair into a loose bun, tucking the ends in. Insert the updo pin up through the base
of the bun.
2. Lift the base of the pin upwards to create a chignon shape and press the pin downwards to secure
your style.
Cruz says that there is absolutely nothing wrong about following trends.“Kaya lang kailangang maging realistic tayo. May mga hairstyles na babagay sa ibang tao na hindi magandang tingnan sa iba.” For instance, Cruz points out that a bob cut is ideal for round faces. The bob cut is a classic hairstyle that has been around for years. And in this harried world we live in, more and more women opt to wear their hair short. “Pero puwede rin namang magpa-bob cut kahit hindi bilugan ang mukha mo pero ‘yun nga lang mas bagay talaga siya sa round faces,” adds Cruz. Some of the more popular types of the bob cut are blunt, graduated, developed out, A-line, asymmetrical, layered, and inverted. It is still best, says Cruz, to ask the opinion of a seasoned hairstylist before you make that crucial choice.
And yes, concludes Cruz, wearing your locks with an attitude works without fail. - Arnel Ramos
